Meet Josh and His Family

June 1, 2024 started off like any other Saturday. Little did we know, our lives were about to be turned upside down. Life is one adventure after the next and what an adventure this one has become.

We started the warm Saturday morning enjoying a nice swim at the apartment pool that had just opened for the season. Everyone was having a great time until my accident. Rachel was 7 months pregnant at the time and the first to reach me. She thought I was joking initially but quickly realized I was in trouble. Her 7 year old James was with us as well along with his friend. I can't imagine what was running through their heads.

I knew instantly what had happened. A few people helped stabilize my neck and swam me to the shallow end until an ambulance arrived. I was able to keep it together until the ambulance ride, when reality set in and the audience and adrenaline was gone.

Several days later, waking up on a ventilator, entered the darkest storm of our lives. Learning I had undergone extensive surgery with rods and screws to put my neck back together, I was now a C5-7 quadriplegic.

I spent 4 weeks at mission before transferring to the Shepherds Center in Atlanta. This facility was a saving grace! I spent 2 more months in inpatient therapy before transferring to their outpatient program. After another month, I was ready to be home. Little did I know what reality was going to be like when I got home.

Through the support of Rachel's mother, James's dad and stepmother, Rachel was able to stay in Asheville and welcomed Ava into the world on August 8th. A few weeks passed before I got to hold her in Atlanta and oh what a feeling!

I was extremely blessed to receive 2 go fund me accounts, church donations and an abundance of help with baby supplies from throughout the community. I am so grateful to all of you and also why my amazing boss Scott has set up this golf tournament. All proceeds go to us and have helped purchase me an adaptive van, provide accommodations for Rachel, James and Ava to move in with my parents, and a plethora of opportunities to benefit my recovery which is an everyday struggle.

From the bottom of my heart thank you all!
